Simple enough for a first timer

Categorising expenses on the phone while sat in the van works well. HMRC submission went through first time with no error messages.

Pros

Categorising expenses on the phone while sat in the van works well.

Cons

Reporting is thin if you want anything beyond income and expenses.

Does the MTD job without the ceremony

It does not try to be a full ledger, which is exactly why I can use it, and the tax estimate updates as you go so January is not a shock. No payroll at all, which caught me out when I took someone on, but we live with it.

Pros

It does not try to be a full ledger, which is exactly why I can use it.

Cons

No payroll at all, which caught me out when I took someone on.

Good starting point, you will move on

The tax estimate updates as you go so January is not a shock. The free tier covered everything I needed until I registered for VAT.

Pros

The tax estimate updates as you go so January is not a shock.

Cons

There is no balance sheet, so my accountant still does a year end job.

Works for a one person business

Categorising expenses on the phone while sat in the van works well. That said, no payroll at all, which caught me out when I took someone on and there is no balance sheet, so my accountant still does a year end job.

Pros

Categorising expenses on the phone while sat in the van works well.

Cons

No payroll at all, which caught me out when I took someone on.

It does not try to be a full ledger, which is exactly why I can use it. Only real gripe is that the mobile app occasionally logs me out mid entry.

Cheap and it files

The tax estimate updates as you go so January is not a shock. Quarterly updates take about ten minutes once the bank feed is set up.

Pros

The tax estimate updates as you go so January is not a shock.

Cons

The mobile app occasionally logs me out mid entry.

Mixed. The tax estimate updates as you go so January is not a shock, but reporting is thin if you want anything beyond income and expenses.

Good starting point, you will move on

The tax estimate updates as you go so January is not a shock. My accountant can see the figures without me emailing spreadsheets.

Pros

The tax estimate updates as you go so January is not a shock.

Cons

Importing two years of history from a spreadsheet was fiddly.
