Cloud HR and people system for larger organisations, built on Salesforce

What is Sage People?

Sage People is the top of the Sage HR range and a fundamentally different product from Sage HR. It is built on the Salesforce platform, it is sold to organisations with several hundred employees upwards, and it is bought by an HR director rather than an office manager. Understanding that positioning saves a lot of wasted demo time.

What it does well

Multi country capability is the main draw. Organisations with people in several territories need different employment terms, different leave rules and different reporting in one system, and Sage People is designed for that rather than adapted to it. For a UK headquartered business with offices abroad, this is usually the requirement that rules out smaller platforms.

The Salesforce foundation is a genuine advantage if you already run Salesforce. Shared identity, a familiar administration model and a large ecosystem of connected tools mean your existing platform team can support it. If you do not use Salesforce, that same foundation is mostly invisible.

Workforce analytics is stronger than anything else in the Sage range. Attrition, diversity reporting, workforce planning and the kind of board level people data that a growing organisation is increasingly asked to produce.

Where it falls short

No published pricing, an implementation project and a partner relationship. This is enterprise software with an enterprise buying cycle, and the first year cost will be a multiple of the licence. Budget for configuration and change management, not just subscription.

It is also more system than most UK mid sized businesses need. Organisations of 250 to 500 people frequently find the capability genuinely useful and the administrative overhead genuinely heavy. Be honest about whether you have the HR operations capacity to run it well.

UK payroll is not included. Sage People handles the people system; payroll runs elsewhere, and the integration is something to scope carefully rather than assume.

The UK detail that matters

For a UK organisation the questions to press on are UK statutory leave handling, right to work record keeping, GDPR data handling for employee records including retention and erasure, and exactly how it connects to whichever UK payroll you run. Ask about data residency in writing, because employee data is among the most sensitive you hold.

Who should buy it

Organisations above roughly 250 employees, especially those operating in more than one country or already committed to Salesforce. Everyone smaller should look at Sage HR first and only move up when a specific requirement forces it.

Multi country was the deciding factor

Running four countries in one system was the requirement and it delivers. Only real gripe is that no UK payroll, so the integration needs proper scoping.

Powerful, and a real project

More system than we needed at 300 people, and the administrative overhead is heavy for a mid sized HR team. Running four countries in one system was the requirement and it delivers, which is about the only positive.

Enterprise HR, enterprise effort

Running four countries in one system was the requirement and it delivers, and configurable workflows matched our process rather than the other way round. No complaints so far.

Pros

Running four countries in one system was the requirement and it delivers.

Cons

Cost is enterprise and the licence is only part of it.
