Advanced UK payroll with no limit on employee numbers, priced by headcount band

What is Sage 50 Payroll?

Sage 50 Payroll is the product UK payroll bureaux and in house payroll managers have used for years. Where Sage Payroll is built for a business owner running a small pay run themselves, this is built for someone whose job title contains the word payroll, and the difference in depth is considerable.

What it does well

It scales without complaint. Pricing runs in bands from £41 per month for up to 15 employees, through £56.50 for 25, £108.50 for 50 and £116 for 100, up to £160.50 per month for unlimited employees, all excluding VAT. For a payroll of two hundred people, that unlimited band is inexpensive per head compared with anything priced per employee.

The compliance coverage is thorough. RTI, pension auto enrolment with assessment and postponement, statutory payments, attachment of earnings orders, and the reporting that an auditor or a pension provider will actually ask for. Sage has been building this for UK payroll legislation for decades and it shows in the edge cases rather than the headline features.

Correction handling is better than most. Payroll goes wrong, and the measure of a package is what happens next: rolling back a pay run, correcting a prior period and producing an amended submission are all supported paths rather than improvisation.

Where it falls short

It expects competence. This is not software that guides a novice through their first pay run, and a business owner without payroll training will find it unforgiving compared with the cloud product. Budget for the learning or for someone who already knows it.

The banded pricing has hard edges. Crossing from 25 to 26 employees moves you from £56.50 to £108.50, which is close to double for one extra person. If you are sitting just under a band boundary and growing, model the step before it arrives.

It is also desktop software in a market moving to the browser. Sage has added cloud connectivity, but if your payroll person works remotely full time, test that arrangement properly during the trial.

The UK detail that matters

This is UK payroll legislation built into a UK product: RTI submissions, auto enrolment, and the statutory calculations that change every April. Sage 50 P11D handles taxable benefits as a separate product if you need P11D reporting, which is worth pricing at the same time. There is no limit on employee numbers on the top band.

Who should buy it

UK employers with more than about twenty five staff, payroll bureaux, and anyone whose payroll involves complexity that a simplified cloud tool will not express. If you have fewer than fifteen employees and no payroll specialist, Sage Payroll will serve you better and cost less.

Corrections actually work properly

Mixed. Statutory payments calculate correctly every April without fail, but still desktop at heart and remote working is clunky.

Reliable through every April change

Attachment of earnings orders are supported without a workaround. Only real gripe is that the jump from the 25 band to the 50 band is close to double.

Built for someone who knows payroll

Auto enrolment assessment and postponement are handled properly, and we run 240 people on the unlimited band and it does not blink. Still desktop at heart and remote working is clunky, but we live with it.

Pros

Auto enrolment assessment and postponement are handled properly.

Cons

Still desktop at heart and remote working is clunky.
