FreshBooks came at accounting from a different direction to most. It started as invoicing software for freelancers who hated chasing payment, and it grew into a full accounting product from there. What it does well

Invoicing is the best in class here. Professional invoices, automated payment reminders, online payment links and the ability to see when a client has viewed an invoice all come together in a way that genuinely gets you paid faster. For a freelancer or agency, that is the whole ball game, and FreshBooks nails it.

Time tracking and project profitability are properly built in, so a service business can track billable hours against a project and pull them straight onto an invoice. Expenses, mileage and a clean mobile app round out a product that a non accountant finds approachable from day one.

Pricing is transparent, with Lite at sixteen pounds a month, Plus at thirty and Premium at forty two, all excluding VAT, and a near permanent introductory discount.

Where it falls short

The lower tiers cap the number of billable clients, so a growing agency can hit that ceiling and be pushed up a tier sooner than the headline price suggests. Read the client limits before you choose.

It is lighter on traditional double entry bookkeeping and inventory than Xero or QuickBooks, so a product business or anyone needing deep financial reporting may find it thin. The American roots also show in some defaults, though the UK edition handles VAT.

The UK detail that matters

FreshBooks supports Making Tax Digital for VAT in its UK edition, so a VAT registered business can file directly. As a service focused tool the UK considerations are VAT handling and how it fits your invoicing rather than deep compliance features, and prices exclude VAT.

Who should buy it

Freelancers, consultants and agencies that bill by time and project and want invoicing that gets them paid, with accounting attached. Product businesses, or anyone needing deep bookkeeping and inventory, will be better served by Xero, QuickBooks or Sage.
