Sage Intacct

Sage Intacct is what Sage sells to a finance function rather than to a business owner. The dividing line is roughly twenty employees and a finance team that has a qualified accountant in it. If your month end involves consolidating entities, allocating across departments and projects, and explaining variances to a board, this is the part of the Sage range built for that work.

What it does well

Dimensional accounting is the reason people choose it. Rather than building an unwieldy nominal code structure to capture department, location, project, fund and customer, Intacct tags transactions with dimensions and lets you report across any combination afterwards. Anyone who has maintained a four segment code structure in an older ledger will understand immediately why this matters.

Multi entity consolidation is genuinely strong. Intercompany transactions, multiple currencies and different reporting calendars are handled as core functionality rather than as a bolt on, and consolidations that took days in a spreadsheet run in minutes. For charities, professional services firms and groups with several trading companies, this is usually the deciding factor.

The reporting layer is the other draw. Real time dashboards that finance can build without calling a consultant, and a close process that can be genuinely shortened rather than just documented.

Where it falls short

Sage does not publish a price, and that tells you what you need to know about the sales process. Expect a scoped quote, an implementation partner, and a total first year cost well into five figures once configuration and data migration are included. It is not a product you sign up for on a Tuesday afternoon.

It is also more finance platform than business suite. Manufacturing, deep inventory and field operations are not its natural territory, which is why Sage sells Operations for Sage Intacct alongside it. If your problem is the warehouse rather than the ledger, look at Sage 200 or X3 first.

Implementation quality varies enormously by partner. The software is consistent; the outcome depends heavily on who configures your dimensions and your chart of accounts at the start, and that decision is expensive to revisit later.

The UK detail that matters

Intacct originated in the United States and the UK edition has been developed to suit local requirements, so check the specifics that apply to you during the demo rather than assuming parity with the US product. Confirm your VAT scheme, your MTD submission route and your consolidation requirements in writing before signing, and ask directly about UK support hours and where your data is held.

Who should buy it

Organisations with twenty or more employees, a real finance team, and either multiple entities or reporting requirements that a small business ledger cannot express. If you are choosing between Intacct and staying on Sage 50, the question is whether you need dimensions and consolidation. If you do, nothing cheaper will solve it.
