A British built accounting package with a free MTD plan for sole traders and landlords

What is Clear Books?

Clear Books is one of the quieter British built accounting tools, and it deserves more attention than it gets. It has been serving UK small businesses, sole traders and landlords for years, and it leans into exactly the things a UK business needs rather than adapting a global product to fit. Its free Making Tax Digital plan for the self employed is a genuine draw as the new rules land.

What it does well

Being UK built from the start shows. VAT schemes, Making Tax Digital and the everyday needs of a small British business are handled natively rather than approximated, and the free plan for sole traders and landlords facing MTD for Income Tax is a real, no cost route to compliance.

The paid tiers are clean and sensibly priced, with Small at sixteen pounds a month covering a typical small business, and Medium and Large adding capability and users. Invoicing, expenses, bank reconciliation and VAT returns all work without fuss, and the interface is approachable.

Support is UK based and the company understands the UK accountant relationship, so working alongside a bookkeeper is straightforward.

Where it falls short

The app ecosystem and integrations are smaller than Xero or QuickBooks, so if you rely on connecting your accounting to a lot of other systems, check the specific integration exists first.

It is less widely known, which means fewer accountants have hands on experience with it than with the big three. If you want your accountant deeply familiar with your software, confirm they are happy to work in it.

The deeper reporting and analytics are lighter than the market leaders, which suits its small business focus but limits a more complex operation.

The UK detail that matters

Clear Books is a UK product with UK support, recognised for Making Tax Digital for VAT and offering a free MTD plan aimed at sole traders and landlords. That free route is genuinely useful given the Making Tax Digital for Income Tax changes, and prices exclude VAT.

Who should buy it

UK small businesses, sole traders and landlords who want a British built tool with a free MTD option and clean, affordable paid tiers. Businesses that depend on a large integration ecosystem or want the widest accountant familiarity should compare against Xero and QuickBooks.
